TEAM HISTORY
U18 Team History (05/06/06)

The Under 18 team has been part of the Club since 1998 when a number of players were pulled together from other Clubs as they were too young to move to 11 aside football. Not only did they have to deal with leaving their old team mates behind but they had to get used to a new set.

Tim Hunt took on the position of Manager, and the team were based at Oaklands School Weedswood playing 6 aside matches.

The first two seasons were difficult for the team, many new players hadnt played before and the highlight of that period was the 1-0 victory against Champions Horsted that is still talked about today.

Our move to 11 a-side football brought a change of fortune and in their first season (2000-01) the team won Division 2 with a final day victory against Oak Athletic.

A season of conciliation followed in 2001-02 where the team adjusted to the pace and demands of Division 1 football, but the following season (2002-03)with the loss of a number of players the team were relegated.

A period of rebuilding followed and new players were attracted to the team and this was rewarded in 2004-05 season when they won the Division 2 title once more and were beaten finalists in the John Leeds Trophy, losing 2-0 to Division 1 side Woodcombe Youth.

The following season saw the team rise to the challenge of Division 1 football again and an unexpected 9 straight wins at the start lifted expectations within the squad. Reigning Champions Bredhurst put paid to our title hopes with a demoralising 0-7 home loss, but the team rallied and won its final game 3-0 with only 10 men. A second place finish was guaranteed when Woodcombe lost their last game of the season to Sheerness and Slade were celebrating the runners up spot in Division 1, our hightest ever position.

In season 2006-07 with Champions Bredhurst leaving the MNYL to pursue their football in the County League under the guise of Lordswood U18, Walderslade were expected to fill their mantle and rose admirably to the challenge losing only 1 league game all season, to New Ash Green primarily to the absence of their regular keeper Ben Arnold. This season also saw their first foray into the Kent Youth Cup with a comfortable home victory against Omega leading to a difficult second round fixture against an impressive Sheppey side from the County League resulting in a 0-5 defeat. Slade also had extended run in the League Cup with cruelly ended in a semi final defeat to Spartac although the 2-3 scoreline didnt truly reflect 'Slade's dominance.

The season was rapped up with an emphatic victory against bottom of the league side Borstal 88 to secure the title.

The team had high hopes for the following season, though the loss of three overage players and the departure of Rob Dugmore, who relocated to Norwich with his family, were sure to test the resolve of the remaining squad. The introduction of 3 new players saw the team go from strength to strength to record its second successive league title. The only negatives to the season were the loss of the Cup semi final to rivals Riverview in a tense and see-sawing match, and the heavy defeat at the hands of a talented Dartford side in the Kent Cup at their new stadium.
